Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv kills at least 17 people
Russian forces killed at least 17 people and wounded 44 in a missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region on Tuesday night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
The strike involved 24 ballistic missiles, four Zircon and Onyx missiles, and 115 drones, according to Zelensky. He said the attack's main targets were warehouses belonging to civilian businesses, as well as a railway station, a brewery and civilian logistics infrastructure.
Among the sites hit were a warehouse belonging to a retail store in Kyiv's western Sviatoshynskyi district and an unnamed “industrial facility” in the southern Holosiivskyi district, rescue workers said. In the surrounding Kyiv region, warehouses in the Brovary and Bucha districts were struck, along with an enterprise in the Fastiv district. In Brovary, logistics centres and a railway platform were hit. Ukraine's national railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, later said the bodies of several people had been found there.
Retail chain Epicentr said a logistics centre on Kyiv's Viskozna Street had burned down completely. The company said the strikes also destroyed a production and logistics complex, a tile and porcelain tile plant in the village of Kalynivka in the Fastiv district, and two other warehouses elsewhere.
In Brovary, the largest warehouse belonging to major appliance retailer Rozetka was completely destroyed, the company's co-owner, Iryna Chechotkina, said. She said the logistics centre, which had processed more than 100,000 orders a day, could not be rebuilt.
A strike on a logistics centre operated by the postal service Nova Poshta in Kyiv killed three people and wounded eight others, the company said, adding that the building was destroyed.
Russia's Defence Ministry said the strike had targeted transport, logistics and distribution centres that it claimed were being used to store drones, drone components and “dual-use goods”. The ministry named the MLP-Chaika and Trans-Logistik logistics centres, a Nova Poshta terminal and an Epicentr warehouse as targets.
