A massive overnight Russian combined missile and drone strike against the Ukrainian capital Kyiv has killed six people and injured 34 more, the Kyiv police reported on Friday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as “wicked” in a post on X and said that children and a pregnant woman had been among the injured.
Adding that the strike was “aimed at causing maximum harm to people and civilian infrastructure”, he said that dozens of apartment buildings in the capital had been damaged as well as the Azerbaijani Embassy building.
In total, Russia launched approximately 430 drones and 18 missiles at Ukraine overnight, Zelensky said.
While Kyiv was the main target of Russia’s overnight strikes, Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region, northeastern Sumy region, and southern Odesa region were also struck. Zelensky reiterated his call for tougher sanctions on Russia, including greater restrictions on the sale of Russian oil, and for additional air defence systems and missiles to be transferred to Ukraine.
Ukrainian drones attacked the Russian Black Sea port city of Novorossiysk overnight, targeting the Sheskharis oil terminal, one of southern Russia’s largest, Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said, adding that drones had damaged several apartment buildings in Novorossiysk, as well as a civilian vessel, injuring three crew members.
The Russian Defence Ministry did not comment on the Novorossiysk drone strike, but announced on Friday morning that Russia’s air defence forces had shot down 216 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 66 over the Krasnodar region and 59 over the Black Sea.
