Sevastopol left without power after Ukraine targets energy facilities in Russian-annexed Crimea

A series of Ukrainian airstrikes targeting key energy facilities in Russian-annexed Crimea overnight left Sevastopol, the peninsula’s largest city, without power on Wednesday morning, according to the Russian-installed city head, Mikhail Razvozhayev.

Telegram channel Crimean Wind reported that multiple Ukrainian drones had caused a fire at an electricity substation serving Sevastopol. Two people were injured in the strikes, Razvozhayev announced later, adding that power had already been restored to some areas of the city. 

Elsewhere in Crimea, Ukrainian airstrikes also led to a fire breaking out at a thermal power plant in the regional capital Simferopol, Telegram channel ASTRA reported, though the Russian-appointed authorities have not yet commented on the situation. 

In Russia, two people were killed and two others were injured in a Ukrainian airstrike on the country’s central Nizhny Novgorod region overnight, according to Governor Gleb Nikitin, who said that an unnamed industrial facility and several residential buildings had also been damaged. Ukrainian drones also attacked a Nizhny Novgorod region oil refinery belonging to Russian energy giant Lukoil overnight, according to local residents.

In Russia’s Urals, Ukrainian drones struck a Gazprom gas processing plant outside the city of Orenburg, independent Russian media outlet Mediazona reported, referencing satellite images taken by NASA’s FIRMS service.

The Orenburg region’s governor, Yevgeny Solntsev, said that Ukrainian drones had been downed over an unnamed industrial facility that morning, though he didn’t give any further details of any damage caused or of potential casualties.
